There are many different job roles within finance, from entry level positions where experience isn't necessarily needed, to graduate roles and roles for those more experienced. Positions include accountants, admin managers, payroll and purchase ledger.

Who can I work for?

Many companies employ people to work in their finance department, or in a single finance role within the company if they're a smaller company.

Where and when can I work?

When working in finance you can expect to be based in an office, working normal office hours – typically 9am to 5.30pm. Occasionally there may be the requirement to travel to clients, especially for those in an accountancy role.

What can I earn?

Earnings in finance vary depending on the type of role worked in. Admin and finance managers can expect to earn around £20,000, while chartered accountants can earn anything up to £100,000. Salary can be dependent on experience and often rises with the more experience you gain.

What are the benefits?

Benefits of working in finance include only having to work during the week, therefore being able to spend weekends at home.

Are there chances of promotion?

Due to the amount of roles within finance, promotion is always available though it can be competitive.

What will I be responsible for?

By working in finance you can expect your responsibilities to include looking after a company or several companies' accounts; budgeting; forecasting for the year ahead, and payroll duties.

Do I need any experience?

Experience of previously working in an office is beneficial, as is a confidence with numbers. There are also several different finance qualifications that can be obtained, with these of course standing you in good stead.

What attributes are needed?

To work in a finance role you need to be organised, have good time management, enjoy working with numbers, feel confident at working on a computer and enjoy being a part of a team.
