Salisbury is a cathedral city in Wiltshire. It has a population of over 45,000 people. It is the only city in the county and is the second largest settlement in Wiltshire. Stonehenge is just 8 miles northwest of the city of Salisbury and is a popular tourist attraction which draws people to the area throughout the year.
There is a market in Salisbury on Tuesdays and Saturdays named Charter Market and this has taken place within the city since 1227. Salisbury is also home to The Maltings Shopping Centre, an open air shopping centre which is home to many shops, as well as a cafe and a public house. The city of Salisbury provides many job opportunities within the retail sector.
The Salisbury District Hospital is a major employer within the town. It is home to one of eleven specialist spinal injury treatment centres based in the UK. The hospital also acts as a training centre for radiography and physiotherapy students from the University of the West of England.
Salisbury has many art galleries including the John Creasey Museum, situated in Salisbury Library. It has many exhibits including contemporary and modern art from internationally renowned artists and photographers. Other attractions within the city of Salisbury include the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum which has a permanent Stonehenge exhibition with interactive displays about the landmark as well as other archaeology from the area.
