During the Nineteenth Century, Manchester was prominent in the manufacturing industry, due to its dominance in the manufacture of textiles and cotton spinning. Manchester was one of the first industrialised cities and was a very productive centre for the processing of cotton. Manchester has continued to be a leading city for employment and finds itself at the forefront of many industries including the service industry, financial sector, retail and the media, to name but a few, making it a great place to find jobs in all industries.
Manchester has one of the most extensive transport networks in the UK outside London. Manchester Airport is the busiest airport in terms of traffic after the London airports, and Manchester also has extensive bus networks, with over 50 bus companies operating in and around Greater Manchester. Manchester is one of the three main bases for the BBC, along with Bristol and London respectively. Manchester also has the highest number of local radio stations outside of London. This along with other new media companies makes the television, media and production industries very popular for jobs in Manchester.
Like London, Manchester has two football clubs within the premier league. Manchester United and Manchester City. Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, is the largest football club ground within the UK and is the only English club football ground to have hosted the UEFA Champions League final, in 2003. Manchester has a wealth of sporting facilities including facilities for squash and the Manchester Aquatics centre. During the preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, Manchester’s facilities will be used as training grounds for the competitors.
