Chester is a city in the county of Cheshire which is situated close to the border of Wales. Chester has a population of over 118,000 people. The city of Chester was founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, much of the Roman influence remains and Chester's city is home to some of the best preserved city walls in Britain. The walls measure nearly 2 miles and are a popular tourist attraction within Chester. The town's architecture remains a mix of both medieval and Victorian buildings, however there is also a large amount of Roman history associated with the town and Chester is home to a Roman amphitheatre just outside of its city walls. Chester was one of the last towns to fall to the Normans during the Norman conquest of England.
Grosvenor Museum in Chester provides residents with a wealth of Roman history. The museum includes collections of Roman tombstones and an art gallery. The Dewa Roman Experience contains a reconstructed Roman Street for visitors to enjoy. Another structure of historical significance within the city of Chester is Chester Castle, the grounds of which are also the home to Cheshire Military Museum.
Chester thrived as an Industrial town due to its railways and canals providing useful trade routes. The city held prominent cattle markets but the railways proved to be a large source of employment within Chester during this period.
Chester is home to the largest zoological gardens in the UK, Chester Zoo. It also has its own University, the University of Chester which is a large employer within the area. Chester's economy is centred on the tourism and retail industries as well as public administration and service sectors, which provide many jobs within Chester. The finance sector in Chester continues to grow and the town is the home of businesses including Bank of America, HBOS plc and M&S Money.
