Software Engineer

A software engineer designs and implements of a variety of software solutions, from games to advanced software. It is one of the most popular professions in IT.

Who can I work for?

You can work in a variety of disciplines, including web design, games design, internet solutions, training and e-learning programmes and business applications. You could work for a consultancy or agency that provide software solutions or for an IT team within an organisation.

Where and when can I work?

The role is mostly office based and you will typically work 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Overtime may be required on projects or when a deadline is looming.

What can I earn?

The starting salary for a graduate software engineer is £27,000 and with experience you could earn up to £38,500. Senior software salaries typically earn around £50,000.

What are the benefits?

You will be working at the forefront of a fast-paced industry that is constant innovating and developing. Depending on who you work for, the role can be extremely varied so you will never be bored.

Are there chances of promotion?

You can progress to become a senior software engineer or lead software engineer, overseeing a wider team. In the future you could move into a project manager role and after numerous years' experience you could become an IT consultant.

You will be responsible for researching, designing, writing and testing new software programs and developing existing programs. The majority of software engineers will hold a degree in a relevant subject including software engineering, computer science or electrical engineering. Work experience in the industry is highly beneficial too.

You will need to be extremely technical with knowledge of computer applications. You should have a logical mind and excellent numeracy skills, as well as a keen eye for detail.
