Scarborough is a town in North Yorkshire. It is a seaside town on the North Sea coast. Scarborough has a population of over 50,000 people and is one of the larger settlements within North Yorkshire. The town is a very popular tourist destination and it is the largest seaside resort on the Yorkshire coast.
Scarborough has a prominent fishing industry, as the town is home to a functioning harbour with its own fish market. Tourism is central to the economy within Scarborough and provides many employment opportunities throughout the town. The hospitality, retail and service sectors are key areas for employment in Scarborough.
Scarborough has a thriving retail centre and is home to many shops. There is the main pedestrianised shopping street street (home to various chain stores and eateries) as well as Brunswick Shopping Centre which contains boutique independent shops. There is also an indoor market within the town with a large range of antique shops and independent traders, and there is a smaller market on the South Bay. Other industries that do well within the town include printing and healthcare, with Scarborough General Hospital employing over 2,000 members of staff.
Scarborough has three main theatres that host performances all year round. These are: The Stephen Joseph Theatre, The Futurist Theatre and The Open Air Theatre. Scarborough has two cinemas and a wealth of museums including the newly developed Rotunda Museum, which is now a national centre for geology.
