Poole has a commercial port as well as a natural harbour and is a popular destination for tourists to visit. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has its headquarters in Poole, while the harbour also acts
as a base for the Royal Marines.
In the 19th Century the majority of work within the town was centred around the harbour, however this has since declined with the emergence of more prominent industries such as the manufacturing and service sectors.
