Job Description This role focuses on instrument assembly and test involving electronics and optical assembly, alignment and test of the Mass Photometer. The instrumentation we produce involves a combination of lasers, acousto-optics systems, 3D positioners and detection using high specification video cameras. Gaining a full understanding of the optical design and the ability to propose assembly and design improvements is a key aspect of this role. The role offers excellent development opportunities as it is at the heart of manufacturing and service functions which will undergo significant growth in the near future. This positions a successful candidate well for taking over increased responsibility in these functions over time. Responsibilities Assembly and Testing of Mass Photometry Instruments * Producing equipment to detailed assembly instructions and documented test routines * Manufacturing techniques including assembling and aligning optical components; combinig laser alignment of components with image quality assessment and correction * Developing a full understanding of the underlying optics design to diagnose faults and issues, resolve their causes and propose improvements * Testing development and data anlysis to monitor instrument performance against specification, and improve mean performance in critical areas while reducing variabilty in production Operations Engineering * Documentation of protocols, in-process results, issues and potential improvements during operations activities * Designing and implemention lean manufacturing techniques * Continuous improvement in operations facilities, tools and techniques, focusing on produtivity gains and cost reduction Requirements * Background in optical instrumentation, microscopy (preferably single molecule analytics), and / or photonics (>2 years) * MSc in Photonics / Optics-related field, PhD preferred * Experience in building new systems and aligning optical equipment, particularly: * Kinematic mounting; and * Alignment of lenses and mirrors using alignment lasers * Ability to understand uptics and mechanical designs to enable fault analysis and improvement proposals * Previous experience in assembling and testing scientific instrumentation preferred * Class 4 Laser Safety training is desirable Benefits * Competitive salary, proportionate to experience * 5% Company pension contribution * 25 days' annual leave * Comprehensive employee insurances including private medical, life assurance, critical illness and income protection More
