The Physician Associate role is being developed to work alongside the medical and nursing teams, managing patients with a full-range of surgical conditions through ward based rotations to include the Ambulatory Care Unit. Each ward covers acute and elective General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Gynaecology patients. The Ambulatory Care Unit with integrated Surgical Assessment Unit offers same day emergency care to patients at the hospital, providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment without being admitted into a hospital bed overnight wherever possible.
These posts will be well supported by a large team of junior doctors at FY1 / FY2 / ST level, in addition to the daily on-call teams. There are appropriately high levels of nursing staff and skill mix, supported by a full multi-professional team comprising pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and care managers.
Successful applicants would work as integral members of the wards acting as key liaison between medical and nursing teams, linking multi-disciplinary streams for each patient, maximising patient flow and supporting nurse-led discharges. Successful applicants would be fully supported in developing their skills in looking after elective and acute surgical patients.
Qualified PAs may develop specialist expertise through practice learning and continuing professional development (CPD) that reflects the speciality of their interest.
