Skiers are generally a sociable lot. Their annual ski-ing holiday is the one thing that keeps many of them going through the winter. And it'll be your job to take the hassle out of their stay, so they can concentrate on enjoying themselves – on and off the piste.
Who can I work for?
There are five main UK ski centres, based in Scotland. They are Glenshee, Glencoe, Nevis Range, Cairngorm (Aviemore), Lecht Ski and Activity Centre. But there are scores upon scores more in Europe, particularly Italy, France and Switzerland. Worldwide tour operators such as Tui and Crystal find workers in the UK in the run-up to a winter season and send them out to their chalets at the start of the season.
Where and when can I work?
In a ski resort chalet in winters only. This doesn't have to be a problem, though, for those seeking year-round employment. Instead of chasing the sun, you could chase the snow and work all year round with the right worldwide tour operator. You'll be prepared to travel. Hours will be long, sometimes only getting one day off a week with late finishes and early starts.

What are the benefits?
...Transport, basic living costs (such as accommodation, food, drink and power) and often a free ski pass. Tips. This can be a useful and memorable way for students to spend a gap year.
Are there chances of promotion?
This will look good on your CV if and when you want to work as a rep or chalet manager with a travel agency or work in hotels or tourism.
What will I be responsible for?
- Meeting and greeting guests upon their arrival.
- Preparing and serving hot food and snacks.
- Washing up, clearing tables and setting places for the next meal.
- Tidying and cleaning the living areas and bedrooms.
- Helping with childcare facilities.
- Liaising with senior reps and management.
- Acting as the public face of your tour firm.
What qualifications do I need?
None. But a good set of GCSEs, especially English, will go in your favour.
Do I need any experience?
Prospective employers will look favourably upon any customer service experience, especially in hospitality. Energy and drive should outweigh any experience, however. You may receive a standard in-house cookery course.
What attributes are needed?
An ability to work in small teams. Normally, you'll be paired up with another host. You'll be personable, courteous and well turned out. You'll preferably have a passion and knowledge for ski-ing. Stamina. Enthusiasm. Friendliness. You'll be happy to work away from home. You won't mind a bit of cold.
