A school cleaner works to ensure that the premises of the institute they work for are clean, tidy and safe. School cleaning is a varied and flexible job.
Who can I work for?
As well as primary and secondary schools there are also opportunities at colleges, universities and specialist institutions.
Where and when can I work?
Anywhere in the country. All schools require a cleaner, and sometimes even a team of cleaners, to ensure their premises are kept clean. Due to the nature of the work, school cleaners are required to carry out their duties outside of school hours. This means that shifts, which usually last around two to three hours at a time, will take place in the morning or late afternoon.
What can I earn?
School cleaners are usually paid on an hourly basis. The level of pay is typically around minimum wage, however this can vary depending on the level of duties and location of the institute.
What are the benefits?
Short hours and regular work are the standout benefits of a school cleaner's role. A flexible or part-time position means that those with other commitments during the day are able to earn money, while ensuring other responsibilities are managed too.
Are there chances of promotion?
As this role is largely unskilled, there aren't many opportunities for school cleaners to increase their earnings or move up the career ladder. The main way to increase earnings and climb the career ladder is to become an employer by establishing a cleaning agency of your own. This requires strong experience and investment. Alternatively, by taking NVQ qualifications you can also increase your chances of securing managerial positions in the future.
What will I be responsible for?
The general duties of a school cleaner include dusting, wiping surfaces and polishing furniture or windows. Cleaners are expected to clean all the rooms in the school, including bathrooms and toilets.
Do I need any experience?
School cleaning is considered unskilled work; therefore no specific qualifications are required. You will need to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure, as you will be working near children.
What attributes are needed?
School cleaners need to be honest and responsible. Reliability is also vital, as institutes need premises to be clean and safe for the next school day.
You will need to be hard working, and have a thorough approach to your responsibilities. Those that cut corners do not last long in the industry.
