A nail technician is someone who works to improve the look of their clients' nails, either by giving them a manicure/pedicure or giving them a decorative treatment, such as nail extensions.
Who can I work for?
As a nail technician you could work either for yourself or for a beauty salon. A great thing about this job role is that there's always scope for employment, as people love to be pampered, so whether you set up your own business or work for a large employer, such as a hotel chain, you'll be needed.
Where and when can I work?
In terms of hours, nail technicians normally work on an appointment basis, where they take on as little or as much work as they wish. The amount of hours worked will depend on whether you work for yourself or someone else.
What can I earn?
Earnings vary from around £12,000 to £20,000, with the more senior of nail technicians earning anything up to £25,000.

What will I be responsible for?
As a nail technician you could expect to be involved with many tasks, from making and scheduling appointments to greeting clients and carrying out the actual nail work yourself.
What qualifications do I need?
As being a nail technician is a skilled occupation, you would need to pass certain tests and exams to prove your proficiency, such as an NVQ Level 2 in Nail Services or a BTEC award. There is also the opportunity for on-the-job training in some beauty salons, where you can join as an apprentice with the salon training you.
Do I need any experience?
Whilst there's no compulsory experience needed to work as a nail technician, it's advisable to be able to demonstrate experience of working within a beauty salon previously.
