Manufacturing engineers plan, design, setup, modify, and monitor manufacturing processes. They work to produce high-quality construction materials using the most cost-effective methods and with the aim of reducing the impact of production on the environment.
Who can I work for?
The principles of manufacturing engineering apply to all industries, so you could work in numerous sectors including construction, food and drink, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.
Where and when can I work?
Most companies operate a shift system, based on a 40-hour week. Working hours may include weekend and evening work and overtime could be required, particularly at busy times.
What can I earn?
Starting salary for a manufacturing engineer is around £24,000. Chartered engineers can expect a salary around £40,000 and this goes even higher with experience.
What are the benefits?
There is the option to move around many different industries and learn a lot of new working practices and skills. Work is readily available too, so you can look forward to good job security.
Are there chances of promotion?
Getting chartered status will greatly improve your chances of promotion. Some manufacturing engineers will become project managers or some will specialise in a particular area and concentrate on the research and development.
What will I be responsible for?
Designing new systems and processes and improving existing ones, ensuring all product and system requirements are taken into account from the initial product conception to the finished result, recruiting junior engineers, examining and tendering for new equipment to ensure the highest quality at the best price, and organising plant start-up and shut-down schedules amongst other things.
Do I need any experience?
You will need to have an honours degree in engineering or even a masters degree in manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or electronic engineering. In addition, work experience or internships in the manufacturing industry will enhance your prospects.
What attributes are needed?
You will need to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills alongside good project management skills. Leadership qualities and the ability to work on your own initiative are also beneficial.
