Lorry drivers are employed to deliver goods to a specified destination. They need to be licensed drivers, which means having a normal driving licence and also a large goods vehicle licence.
Who can I work for?
Any firm that has a logistics, delivery or distribution department, from small local delivery firms to larger logistics companies.
Where and when can I work?
Drivers are required all over the UK to cover a workflow that is always on the go – seven days a week, 365 days a year. Shifts vary depending on the role.
What can I earn?
Many drivers opt to work for themselves and can earn between £6 and £8 an hour. The typical salary of a driver can vary and is dependent on a number of factors including location, experience and the hours worked. Drivers working nights will usually bring home more money. A salary of anywhere between £12,000 and £30,000 is realistic.
What are the benefits?
Lorry drivers are able to keep active by loading and unloading their vehicles. They are also not tied to a desk all day and get to see the country while working.
Are there chances of promotion?
In some firms there are opportunities to progress on to driving larger trucks, or to the transporting of chemicals. For some of these roles you will need to sit some extra exams. There are opportunities for promotion to managerial positions for the right candidates.
What will I be responsible for?
Planning the best route(s) for delivery of goods, loading and unloading of cargo on and off the vehicle, delivering the payload to the required destination(s) and delivering the vehicle back to the depot.
Do I need any experience?
Previous experience of driving and making deliveries will be of benefit. Demonstrable route planning experience will also be beneficial.
No academic exam passes are currently required to be a lorry driver. However a car driving licence and large goods vehicle licence are necessary.
What attributes are needed?
Lorry drivers need to be safety conscious, observant, excellent drivers, and have a strong knowledge of the UK road network.
