Landscape architects plan, design and manage open spaces including both natural and built environments, to create the landscape around us.
Who can I work for?
You could work for construction contractors and consultancies, environmental agencies, water companies, local government and private architect practices.
Where and when can I work?
You will usually work a standard 37-hour, five-day week, but hours can vary. Evening and weekend working is not unusual, particularly when working to a tight deadline. Time is usually split between the office base and on site.
What can I earn?
The starting salary for a graduate landscape architect is £20,000. Fully qualified, chartered landscape architects with experience can earn in excess of £45,000. Earnings are generally higher in the private sector.
What are the benefits?
Jobs are widely available in local authorities nationwide so there are plenty of employment opportunities. There are also increasing private sector vacancies abroad, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, so travel is a real possibility.
Are there chances of promotion?
In general, career progression involves more responsibility, project management and overseeing team members. With enough experience you can look to become a partner of your private practice or even set up your own business. In the future, you can move in to consultancy or lecturing.
What will I be responsible for?
The work covers both urban and rural projects, ranging from designing the layout of public parks and gardens to mapping out housing estates and city-centres. You will work with other construction professionals, especially architects, planners, environmentalists and people working in surveying and engineering functions.
Do I need any experience?
Applicants generally have a recognised degree, followed by a postgraduate diploma accredited by the Landscape Institute. Practical experience in a landscape-related field is helpful as is experience of working in the voluntary sector.
What attributes are needed?
You will need to be enthusiastic with good verbal and written communication skills. A technical mind with excellent drawing and creative abilities is also desirable as is commercial acumen to be able to identify new business opportunities.
