Hydrologists are employed to monitor, manage and protect water resources in commercial, residential and environmental settings. They play a critical role in ensuring the safe, sustainable and environmentally sound management of natural and domestic water resources.
Who can I work for?
You can work for government and environmental agencies, utility companies, construction consultancies and research and academic institutions. It's a highly specialised area so vacancies are limited.
Where and when can I work?
Hydrologists work in the water industry throughout the UK and more locally for environmental bodies and civil engineering consultancies. Standard office hours apply; however, overtime may be required in extreme circumstances, such as a flood.
What can I earn?
Salaries start from £17,000 rising to £32,000 with three to five years' experience. More senior hydrologists and principal hydrologists can earn upwards of £35,000.
What are the benefits?
Opportunities to travel around the country and overseas regularly arise. As a specialist, you can also look to work as a consultant or as a freelance, gaining exposure to a wide range of businesses and experiences.
Are there chances of promotion?
You can look to rise through the ranks of your employer to become a senior hydrologist or principal hydrologist. Alternatively, you can move in to water resources management or to scientific posts within environmental agencies and academic institutions.
What will I be responsible for?
Hydrologists ensure the effective flow of water through channels and pipes for the engineering and control of water provision. Their work contributes to the efficient planning, development and sustainable use of natural and domestic water resources and they ensure water is supplied in the most cost-effective manner. Hydrologists use detailed data sources, computer modelling packages and other resources to collect, analyse and interpret data.
Do I need any experience?
Ideally you should hold a degree in a relevant subject, including environmental science, environmental management, civil engineering, geography, geology, soil science and ecology.
A work placement in a relevant or related field, such as hydrometrics, is also recommended.
What attributes are needed?
A technical and analytical mind, strong verbal and written communication skills, numeracy and IT skills and a logical approach are all essential. You will also need to demonstrate project management skills and the ability to adapt to ever-changing situations.
