Educational assessors work to ensure that national qualification standards are the same across the UK, this may be through working with regulatory bodies such as Ofsted or working to also give employees training for the qualification they are teaching.

Who can I work for?

There are opportunities with a number of organisations, from regulatory bodies like Ofsted to examination bodies such as Edexcel.

Where and when can I work?

Opportunities are available in all areas across the UK. Education assessors will usually work a 37 to 40-hour week, but with possible longer hours for those needing to travel long distances.

What can I earn?

Salaries vary between £19,000 and £25,000 a year depending on location and experience.

What are the benefits?

Being on the front line of education assessment means that you are able to help shape the future of many thousands of people. You can help raise standards across the board and ensure that everybody is given the same chance to succeed.

Are there chances of promotion?

Promotion to managerial positions, and to more senior roles at director level, come with experience. The longer you spend with an organisation, the more opportunities arise.

What will I be responsible for?

This depends on the type of position you hold. If you are assessing teachers or students you will need to create reports, supervise people on their job, give advice to candidates, attend meetings with other professionals and test candidates with non-standard situations.

If you work with a body like Ofsted, your reports and assessments will relate to an institution, not individual.

Do I need any experience?

Individuals taking a new position as an educational assessor will have an in-depth knowledge of their particular area or field, with preferably a professional qualification in it as well as an assessing certification such as an A1 or D32.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be an excellent communicator, be able to work with candidates from different backgrounds, be supportive and patient and posses excellent interpersonal abilities.

You will also be well organised, tactful and patient.
