Studio managers are in charge of a design team. They will lead numerous design-related tasks and delegate projects, including web design, product development, advertising or general creative roles.

Who can I work for?

You could find yourself working for a design department of a company in a specialist sector – so gaming through to manufacturing – or for a design agency that works for clients across a range of industries.

Where and when can I work?

Most roles are office based and you will normally work Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, however certain projects may require overtime. Studio manager jobs are available throughout the UK but the bigger creative agencies are based in London.

What can I earn?

Salary is dependant on your location and the sector you work in but studio managers can expect to earn between £25,000 and £70,000 – with most averaging around £40,000.

What are the benefits?

Overseeing a project from final concept through to completion, as well as developing creative minds, brings enormous job satisfaction.

Are there chances of promotion?

From studio manager, you could go on to become an art director or head of creative, overseeing all creative campaigns that come through the agency or organisation you work for. You could also go on to open your own design studio or successfully freelance.

What will I be responsible for?

Ensuring work is delegated based on individuals strengths and skills, creating a workflow structure, compiling studio schedules, ensuring work is delivered on deadline, keeping other departments informed about project status and resource management across both freelance and permanent employees.

Do I need any experience?

You will need extensive studio experience to have gained a thorough understanding of workflows and schedules. Previous management or leadership experience would also be beneficial.

What attributes are needed?

You will need strong communication skills along with excellent organisational skills and advanced knowledge of studio software. You will also need to demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines under stress and be a motivational character.
