As a customer service trainee, you'll be part of a team helping with customer queries, comments and complaints. This could be over the telephone, online or in a face-to-face role.

Who can I work for?

You could work in a shop, bank, local government office, in a call centre, or perhaps for an insurance or energy company. You might also work in a specific customer services team or department.

Where and when can I work?

The role is generally office-based and working hours will depend on the opening hours of the customer service department you're working for. Generally, you will work standard office hours of 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday but there may be shift work options on evenings and weekends. Part-time positions and job shares are also a possibility.

What can I earn?

A trainee customer service advisor can expect to earn between £8,000 and £10,500. This will rise depending on qualifications and experience.

What are the benefits?

Larger organisations may provide benefits such as a pension scheme and private healthcare, and you could earn commission on sales if that is a part of your job.

Are there chances of promotion?

Some companies will offer training as an assistant if you show the potential for promotion, and from there you can go on to become a fully-qualified customer service advisor. In the future you can be promoted to supervisory or management roles.

What will I be responsible for?

You will mostly be supporting the wider team in handling enquiries from clients and customers. This could involve basic administrative duties and customer correspondence. The job can be sometimes be challenging, involving high-demand situations and stress.

Do I need any experience?

Employers look for good GCSE or A-Level results, with a particular focus on strong numeracy and literacy skills. Previous experience in a customer-facing role – such as waitressing or working in a call centre – is also advantageous.

What attributes are needed?

You need to be enthusiastic and eager to take direction and learn on-the-job. As well as being well presented, polite and friendly, you also need to show a genuine interest in working with and helping customers and have strong communication skills.
