A construction manager is responsible for overseeing an entire construction project, from the initial conception through to the finished build. They ensure work is done safely, on time and within budget, and to the right quality standards.

Where and when can I work?
Work is site-based, which can mean you are outdoors in all weathers. Your schedule will be dictated by your current project and could require long, demanding hours. You will regularly travel offsite to see clients and project locations.

The starting salary for a construction manager varies greatly depending on location. In London you can expect to start on around £33,000; in some areas of the country you could earn up to £75,000 with experience.

What will I be responsible for?
You will have responsibility for recruitment, preparing the site, planning the work to be done and installing temporary offices for site staff. You will monitor progress, oversee delivery of materials and carry out safety checks and sort out any problems, which could hold up work as they arise – all while keeping the client updated regularly on progress.
Do I need any experience?
The most common route to getting a job as a construction manager is to obtain a degree, an HNC, HND or BTEC qualification, or through the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Graduate Diploma Programme. Alternatively those with several years' industry experience can go into construction management.
What attributes are needed?
You will need to be able to manage projects and people, be assertive and show leadership skills, be highly organised and be able to prioritise effectively. Also, you must have excellent problem solving and conflict management skills.
