A clerical assistant provides both clerical and administrative support to professionals, either as part of a team or individually. You will be involved with the coordination and implementation of office procedures and frequently have responsibility for specific projects and tasks.

Who can I work for?

A clerical assistant plays a vital part in the administration and smooth-running of businesses throughout industry, but the role can vary greatly depending on the sector.

Where and when can I work?

An office-based role, most clerical assistants work standard hours, so 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

What can I earn?

Typically, you will earn around £15,000 but this can increase with experience and responsibility.

Are there chances of promotion?

Working as a clerical assistant will give you a lot of opportunity to progress both in administration and within a company. You can progress to become an office manager or personal assistant or even specialise in the law or finance professions.

What will I be responsible for?

Common tasks for the majority of clerical administrators include word processing, audio and copy typing, letter writing, dealing with telephone and email enquiries, creating and maintaining filing systems, keeping diaries, arranging meetings/appointments and organising travel for staff.

Do I need any experience?

Good GCSE or A-Level grades, particularly in maths and english are certainly beneficial but many employers also take on school leavers who are prepared to undertake training on the job. You could also get work experience or temping roles to build up your experience prior to applying for a role.

What attributes are needed?

Excellent communication and organisational skills plus the ability to multi-task and liaise with people at all levels of the company. Competent computer skills are essentials as are good written, verbal and numerical skills.
