As a civil engineer, you will plan, design and manage construction projects from the relatively small-scale through to large multi-million pound projects.

As a civil engineer you could be employed in any sector from structural, transportation, environmental to maritime and geotechnical.
Where and when can I work?
Usual working hours apply, so between 35 and 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday with time split between the office and working on site.
What can I earn?
Income for new graduate engineers is between £19,500 and £23,000 a year and with more experience you can earn up to £37,000. Chartered engineers can earn significantly more, around £49,000 year.

Are there chances of promotion?
You can develop you career by achieving incorporated or chartered status. An incorporated engineer specialises in the day-to-day management of engineering operations. A chartered engineer takes a more strategic role, planning, researching and developing new ideas.
What will I be responsible for?
Analysing and surveying, drawing up blueprints using computer aided design (cad) packages, assessing costs, time and labour requirements plus the impact to the environment, preparing bids for tenders and monitoring the progress of a project.
Do I need any experience?
Usually a BEng or MEng in civil engineering. You will also need at least five GCSEs grades A-C and two or three A levels, including maths and science. Alternatively, you could work your way up, starting out in the industry as a technician, for example.
What attributes are needed?
Excellent maths, science, and IT skills and the ability to explain ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely. Analytical skills, a confident decision-making ability and project management skills will also go a long way.
