An aerospace engineer researches, designs, develops, maintains and tests the performance of civil and military aircraft, missiles, weapons systems, satellites and space vehicles.

Who can I work for?

You could work for aircraft manufacturing companies and airline operators, the armed forces, Government agencies or, in some cases, within education.

Where and when can I work?

You will be based within an office or laboratory and will typically work from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. There are many opportunities for aerospace engineers across the UK.

What can I earn?

Salaries start at between £20,000 and £25,000 and with experience will rise to £40,000. Engineers at senior levels can earn up to £65,000.

What are the benefits?

The UK has an advanced aerospace industry and you could be working at the forefront of technology and research, leading the way. There is also the opportunity for overseas travel, either to work abroad on research projects or to attend training and conferences.

Are there chances of promotion?

There are lots of opportunities for career progression within the aerospace industry including working in specialist engineering roles, project management, procurement and planning, teaching and consultancy.

What will I be responsible for?

Typical responsibilities include designing, developing and creating aircraft, components and equipment; building and maintaining said equipment; overseeing installation of engines, instruments and other equipment; participating in flight test programmes; maintaining aircraft for full operation; undertaking repairs as necessary and any administrative duties associated with the role.

Do I need any experience?

The majority of candidates have a degree in aeronautical/aerospace engineering or a relevant subject such as physics, electronic engineering, or even mathematics. Work experience in the industry is also highly beneficial.

What attributes are needed?

You will need a technical mind but also be able to show creativity and innovative thinking. You should also be good at problem solving and have a keen eye for detail along with excellent communication skills. A love of aviation, aircraft and flight technology is essential.
