Accounts bookkeepers can find work in almost any profession, such as within corporate businesses, local authorities or educational institutions.
Where and when can I work?
When working in accounts, you can expect to work typical office hours- usually Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Many accounts bookkeepers are office based, although some are self-employed too.
What can I earn?
With little or no experience you could expect to earn in the region of £12,000 to £14,000 per year.
What are the benefits?
Your salary will increase as you get more experience under your belt, typically rising to around £20,000.
Are there chances of promotion?
Those working in accounts have good opportunities for career progression, such as the opportunity to train for further qualifications. Accounts bookkeepers generally go on to become account technicians, before working as a fully chartered accountant.
What will I be responsible for?
You could expect to be responsible for many tasks relating to financial records, as well as cash handling and other office administration, such as balancing accounts, processing invoices and taking payments.
Do I need any experience?
Employers don't usually expect accounts bookkeepers to have a vast amount of experience, although experience of working within an office environment is a benefit, as is basic computer skills.
What attributes are needed?
You would be required to have a logical mind and an ability to work at ease with numbers. It would also benefit you to have good verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, an interest in finance, sound administrative skills, and the ability to work independently.
