Lincoln

The city of Lincoln is within the county of Lincolnshire in the East Midlands. It is home to two universities as well as a beautiful cathedral and a variety of museums and other places of interest for tourists and residents alike. Jobs in Lincoln are popular within the retail sector which is seeing ongoing development within the city. The city of Lincoln also provides many job opportunities within the IT sector with many IT related businesses and mail order companies have premises within the city.

Lincoln is home to Lincoln cathedral which is a beautiful example of medieval architecture. A large proportion of the cathedral dates back to the 13th Century with other parts of the gothic building having been restored over the centuries. The cathedral employs over thirty craftsmen and women to currently look after the building and according to Lincoln Cathedral’s Website is only one of three cathedrals that preserve such traditional skills in the maintenance of its structure, from stone masonry to traditional carpentry.

Although Lincoln suffered slightly with the move away from traditional industrial manufacturing, the development of Lincoln as a university city has sought to further impact on the economy of the city and thus provides Lincoln with the opportunity to create new business opportunities and enterprises within the city. There are two universities within the city; The University of Lincoln is the larger of the two, which was previously known as the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. Whilst retaining a branch of the Lincoln campus on the site of Hull University, the university officially changed its name to the University of Lincoln in 2002.

The other university within the city of Lincoln is Bishop Grosseteste University College. Established in 1862, the university college is much older than the University of Lincoln, which started out in 1996. The university college offers a wide variety of courses at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level and the two universities create a diverse student population within the city which increases revenue and job opportunities for the local businesses of Lincoln.

Lincoln’s local newspaper is the Lincolnshire Echo, which has an accompanying local news website, which can be seen by following the above link. The football club within Lincoln is Lincoln City FC, and the ‘Red Imps’ currently play within League two, which is the fourth tier of English football.

Lincoln Central Railway Station has 5 platforms, and although once having direct services through to the capital, it is now possible to travel to London by catching a connecting service at either Peterborough, Newark or Nottingham. There are scheduled plans to bring back a direct service to London in late 2009, which would make the journey into the capital approximately two hours by direct train. Many bus services operate throughout the city making it easy to travel around Lincoln easily and efficiently with public transport.
