London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. The river Thames crosses the city from the South-West to the East of London. Along with New York and Tokyo, London is one of the world’s three largest financial centres. With many leading financial institutions having head offices based within London, this has lead to an increasing amount of jobs in London within the financial sector. London is a city steeped in history and culture and is also a key centre for fashion, theatre, music, shopping and employment.

London has many job prospects within the service industries, with the larger majority of the employed population working within this industry. The industries of manufacturing, construction and finance also provide a wealth of job opportunities within London.

The summer of 2012 will see London host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. This prestigious honour will create thousands of new job opportunities within London due to the huge construction projects underway currently, as London creates a variety of brand new sports facilities to hold the different competitions within the games.

When the Olympics get underway in 2012 the city of London will see a massive influx of tourism, as millions of visitors from across the globe will gather to watch the Olympics. This will inevitably have a huge impact on the tourism industry which already provides a wealth of job opportunities within London and thus will allow the tourism and leisure job markets to flourish even more during the next few years.

London is the largest city within the European Union by population within city limits, giving it the title of most populous municipality, with a population of 7,556,900 02007-06-30at the time of the 2007 census. It has four World Heritage Sites, which comprise of Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London, Kew Royal Botanical Gardens and the historic settlement of Greenwich.

London has fascinating history and has a multitude of renowned tourist attractions that bring millions of people to London year upon year. London is the permanent residence of Queen Elizabeth II, who resides most of the year round in Buckingham palace. London is also home to the Globe Theatre, where one of the most famous playwrights of all time, William Shakespeare, saw his work come to life on the stage. Of the many tourist attractions in London, the Tower of London is a very popular location to visit, steeped in over 900 years of remarkable history including being the official home of the crown jewels.

The public transport network is known to be the most extensive in the world. Tube stations, airports, and train stations give London excellent transport links internally throughout the whole city and externally to the rest of the world. London currently has four main airports within the city, and has currently seen Heathrow expand with the creation of a new and heavily publicised runway, Terminal 5, in 2008.
