London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. The river Thames crosses the city from the South-West to the East of London. Along with New York and Tokyo, London is one of the world’s three largest financial centres. London is also home to the Globe Theatre, where one of the most famous playwrights of all time, William Shakespeare, saw his work come to life on the stage. Of the many tourist attractions in London, the Tower of London is a very popular location to visit, steeped in over 900 years of remarkable history including being the official home of the crown jewels.
The public transport network is known to be the most extensive in the world. Tube stations, airports, and train stations give London excellent transport links internally throughout the whole city and externally to the rest of the world. London currently has four main airports within the city, and has currently seen Heathrow expand with the creation of a new and heavily publicised runway, Terminal 5, in 2008.
