Gosport is a town, district and borough in Hampshire with around 79,000 resident inhabitants, the population grows to 5-10,000 during the summer months. Historically Gosport was a major naval and military town; however this went into decline in the early twentieth century. Today Gosport is successful in the following industries which provide many jobs within the town: manufacturing, retail, marine and construction businesses make up the core of employment in the area. The town of Gosport is unusual because it is one of the largest towns to not have its own currently operational railway station. The Gosport railway link was closed in 1953. Instead, residents wishing to travel by train have to get the ferry over to Portsmouth to use the Portsmouth railway station, which provides direct links to London and other parts of the UK.
Many people who live in Gosport use it as a dormitory town. According to Gosport Borough Council, the number of people commuting out of the town each day in 2001 was 18,200 compared to 7,600 people commuting in. In addition the number commuting out is increasing at a faster rate than that coming in.
Although most of Gasport's military and naval operations have ceased, the town is still home to the Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival School. These bases provide around 3,000 jobs to the town of Gosport.
