Basildon is a town in Essex, with a population of 169,000 people. For those wishing to commute to London, the capital is only 25 miles away. Basildon emerged as a new town in 1948 as part of the New Towns Act, which aimed to alleviate housing problems in London.
Basildon town centre is largely pedestrianised and is home to the Eastgate Shopping Centre, an indoor shopping centre that has a large number of high street shops, as well as the Westgate Shopping Park and 2 markets.
Basildon's Festival Leisure Park offers a wide selection of entertainment venues for the local area including restaurants, a large cinema, a nightclub complex, health clubs, hotels and a bowling alley. Basildon maintains excellent transport links with the rest of the UK and the London airports are all easily accessible to residents of Basildon.
There are four large industrial estates within Basildon which provide many employment opportunities. There are over 5,000 registered businesses in Basildon, with more than 2,000 of these based in construction and manufacturing. The Ford Motor Company is one of the largest employers within Basildon and they have a research and development department based within the town.
Popular attractions in Basildon include the Langdon Hills Country Park, which offers 400 acres of unbridled woodland, meadows and farmland containing a vast array of wildlife. Gloucester Park is situated close to the city centre and the northern end of the park is home to Basildon's Sporting Village, which has athletics facilities, an International sized swimming pool, as well as a fitness centre.
