Brighton is seaside town on the south coast. Brighton resides within the county of East Sussex and has a population of over 155,000 people. Brighton is just less than an hour away from London on the train, making it a popular seaside destination for those that live in the capital.
Brighton Marine Palace and Pier was opened in 1899. It has restaurants, a funfair and amusement arcades for visitors to enjoy. Brighton's West Pier has not fared as well, after its opening in 1866 the pier suffered due to a number of fires and has been closed since 1975. It is however, one of the only Grade I listed piers in the UK.
Brighton is home to the world's oldest electric railway which runs from Brighton Pier to Brighton Marina along the beach. Brighton's beach is a shingle beach and has been awarded the blue flag environmental award. There are a variety of shops, restaurants and amusements along the seafront for tourists to enjoy.
In May, Brighton hosts the Brighton Festival, the biggest arts festival in the UK outside of Edinburgh. Brighton is also home to the Great Escape Festival; a three day music festival which takes place once a year, as well as Brighton Pride Festival, all of which attract thousands of revellers from across the UK.
Brighton has two universities, The University of Brighton and The University of Sussex, which is just four miles from Brighton's centre. The town has a large population of students who study at the two universities. Brighton's prominence as a seaside town has ensured that it has a thriving tourism industry, which accounts for much of the town's employment opportunities.
